Great tracks lead SCUM to 3 LOL ornaments

A deep inversion had temperatures a balmy -8 deg F in the stadium and -24 deg F in Shannon Park at the bottom of Birch Hill Road and City Lights Blvd. However, Bill Husby set beautiful classical tracks on the Black Loops yesterday, so we were lured down into the chilly depths where we found three more LOL ornaments.

In the black loops, there are a number of cutoffs so the SCUM group scattered, so only Bill, Greg, and Mom found ornament #3:

The other SCUM found LOL ornament #8 when they were lost in the Black Loops but Jerome was able and willing to go back down so we could document his find:

Even on a cold day, Bill’s tracks were a delight as on the N40, you could glide entirely up the uphills after tucking the downhills in the tracks. It was also possible to stride up the Competition Loop in Bill’s clean and deep tracks. As we were finishing up, the grooming crew was heading out the blue loops so likely by now they have new clean tracks, too. The Outhouse Loop really needed new tracks after the recent winds had filled the tracks with balsam poplar leaves.Today was a good day to not be skiing on skins as you enjoyed more free glide.

Enjoy the inversion and the beautiful tracks.

Two inches of wet new snow greet SCUM

Two inches of fresh snow in the past hour and snowing steadily on 11 April–all photos by Joanna Fox

Some SCUM missed the grooming yesterday as one of us needed to file her income taxes. However, two inches of fresh snow covered the icy trails, so we enjoyed a day that looked more like Christmas than approaching Easter and Passover.

A busload of kindergarteners and first graders arrived on skis (no poles needed) as we were leaving, excited to have fresh snow approaching some of their knees.

Enjoy the spring skiing. Today’s snowfall has definitely extended the season.

Lots of snow, no groundhog

There was at least three inches of new snow atop the firm pistenbully groomed black trails so it was a good day to ski all the downhills. There was no sun this morning, so we saw no shadows.

No guts, no glory. Bernardo and Greg (below) are “dusted with the snow of shame” from the Black Funk and Competition downhills (yeah, Black Funk is supposed to be skied uphill, but the trails needed packing and Bill is a groomer, so we went down then up the Black Funk).

Bill had so much fun packing the trails and setting tracks with his skis, he swapped hats and decided to pack the Sunnyside and Cliffside trails using one of their machines:

He saw lots of animal tracks while traveling down the sunlit Cliffside trail. Could some of them belong to a groundhog?

At least on the Cliffside trail, the sun was out, so a groundhog could see his shadow.

With the 4 to 5 inches of new snow on the Sunnyside and Cliffside trails since they were last groomed, I think the ice storm remnants will be well buried before the Gingersnap Special, the Frank Soos Distance Race #2 scheduled for Sunday, 9 February 2025 at 11:00 a.m. Homemade gingersnaps (Frank’s favorite) will be available if you ski either race or volunteer to help out.

Rat ponds escaped chinook debris today

When you’re a PistenBully guru, you know your ski trails under all conditions, so Bill Husby and the SCUM Rat Pack hit the Rat Ponds this morning:

Sunrise was spectacular (and warm)::

and even Bill shed his hat. He definitely approved of the classical tracks on the Rat Ponds.

Wolfman JACKson is emulating Dermot lately when it comes to dressing for SCUM workouts. The Silverback twins, shown above, had dermotized so that they wouldn’t get cold waiting for the slower SCUM.

SCUM enjoying Bill’s PistenBully groomed White Bear trails

Travis Kulp had groomed the White Bear and Moilanen Meadows with the PistenBully Friday night and with the 2025 U.S. National XC Ski Championships taking place in Anchorage this weekend, we had the awesome trails virtually to ourselves on Sunday.

Some SCUM take the path less traveled around corners like Dan Johnson, above.

It was a treat to have firm, fast tracks set by the PistenBully and allowed to set up overnight without having to be racing.

SCUM find 2 LOL ornaments

With temperatures in the Birch Hill stadium at 20 deg and the White Bear trail groomed to absolute perfection, a small group of SCUM oozed out in search of more LOL ornaments. Byron, Jerome, Joanna, and I skied leisurely so that we could scan the woods for ornaments. We were rewarded with LOL ornament number 10:

We also spotted a new SCUMometer at the bottom of the White Bear with the unmistakable Dermot Cole penmanship. Thanks, Dermot. This gives us important data for our workout logs.

Mom spies the thermometer, which gives her reason to rest

The trails were absolutely beautiful at the bottom of the White Bear where the winds seldom blow:

Jerome remained in the lead throughout our tour of the White Bear and Moilanen Meadows. He was going so fast that he missed LOL ornament #1 that we found in the Meadows, so Jerome skied the Meadows twice to see the ornament.

SCUM find LOL ornament # 1

With today’s haul of two ornaments, the SCUM have found half of the 12 LOL ornaments of Christmas. We’ll keep skiing and looking for ornaments 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, and 12.

Happy Holidays from all of us.

SCUM find sweet tracks set by new groomer

SCUM hanging candy canes on spruce trees at Birch Hill–photo by Bill Husby

Temperatures were a little chilly on Sunday, so the SCUM waited until today to decorate trees on Birch Hill trails with candy canes. Skiers are welcome to them as long as they make sure that they properly dispose of the plastic wrappers. Some candy canes are clearly visible, but three of them were put in a spruce tree on the downhill near where Mother SCUM dislocated her shoulder 4 weeks ago.

While decorating trees, the SCUM were very pleased with the opportunity to enjoy Randy Foland’s stellar debut of grooming and setting tracks with the PistenBully. And while enjoying his fast tracks, we spotted LOL ornament #2.

When we ran out of candy canes, we skied the rest of the newly set tracks. Here’s a short video of the SCUM following Rudolf on Randy’s new tracks on the Outhouse loop:

After the Outhouse loop, we followed Bill as he wanted to check out all the trails that Randy had groomed. Sometimes following Bill means skiing trails differently than how they are laid out. Rudolf missed a turn on the Tower Direct.

With many SCUM leaving to spend the holidays with their families, we enjoyed spending today’s ski spreading sweet treats on the trails. We savor the friendships made while skiing.

Randy, welcome to the grooming team! We really appreciated your trail grooming today.

SCUM after fresh snow and relief from -20 deg F temperatures in Fairbanks--photo by Mike Mathers

**Over 9 km of newly groomed and set tracks on lighted loops, which were groomed overnight.

**Temperatures at 10 a.m. AST of +2 deg F after temperatures at Fairbanks International Airport reached -29 deg F at 10:01 a.m. yesterday. Thanks to the inversion, Birch Hill only dropped to about -14 deg F.

**The friendship and company of 10 SCUM enjoying well-groomed trails and balmy temperatures.

**All the Nordic Ski Club of Fairbanks staff and volunteers who help our community enjoy winter outdoors with lessons, tours, training groups, races, and other fun events. They keep us healthy, happy, and at times, slightly sore or tired–but motivated for more.

P.S. Although SCUM may not be fast, two of the skiers in the photo above are skiing on skis that once belonged to World Cup nordic skiers!

SCUM rises to the top

After spending a day removing downed trees, the Nordic Ski Club of Fairbanks groomers transformed the 2024 Slushmageddon (Rick Thoman’s moniker for the record precipitation event of October 21, 2024):

into skiable trails with set classical tracks on October 24. This allowed the SCUM to begin their 29th season, with ski workouts on Friday, October 25.

We joined many eager skiers on Sunday, October 27, preparing for the 38th Denali State Bank Sonot Kkaazoot.
