Dan Johnson skates 30 km virtual Sonot

Saturday morning, Dan Johnson skate skied his 30 km virtual Denal State Bank Sonot Kkaazoot in an official time of 2:43:38.

Dan writes:

“What a beautiful day to ski the “30 km” Sonot Kkaazoot! Perfect weather and beautiful grooming.

My Strava said my moving time was 2:40:42, and only 28.54 km I’m almost certain I didn’t take any shortcuts, but I’ll trust the Race Director to decide if this is an official time.

I’m not sure exactly how and when it stops timing when I stop, but I stopped a couple of times to take a drink and catch my breath. I also used the stop watch on my phone – It gives 2:43:38, so that’s what I’ll call it.

Not to brag, but in addition to several 2nd and 3rd bests, Strava says I set PRs on:
North 40 A Climb, Blue Loop, Tower Loop, Medevac, White Bear from Suicide Cutoff, White Bear Hilltop B Climb, “Saddle”, Terminator.

I have no idea which segments some of these are. I also wasn’t aware that Strava knew so much about me and the details of the Birch Hill loops!  I’m afraid of what else my phone knows about me.

Thanks to to groomers for making this such a great ski.”

I agree that trail conditions today (Saturday) were awesome. We’ll let your phone brag for you since your son-in-law will still make you work to keep up with him and Mara on the trails.

Owen Q. Hanley skates 30 km virtual Sonot in 2:43

The amazing Dr. Owen Q. Hanley, who decades ago told me that he was unable to skate ski, crushed the 30 km virtual Denali State Bank Sonot Kkaazoot in 2:43 on his skate skis through several inches of new snow.

He writes: “Several inches of new snow meant double poling downhill to the WB turn-around and granny-skiing up the hills. I need a pair of e-skis!”

Sorry, Owen. You can skate, and if you can skate the hilly 30 km Sonot Kkaazoot course in 2:43, you do not need a pair of e-skis. So far, only 3 skiers have attempted to skate the 30 km course, and they are all a lot younger than you.

Dr. Leistikow “tours” virtual 30 km Sonot in under 3 hours

Friday, Corrine Leistikow “toured” the 30 km virtual Denali State Bank Sonot Kkaazoot in 2:59:06.

Corrine writes: “I was home feeling sorry for myself because my weekend plans were cancelled so decided I should go ski. Didn’t feel like racing so just toured the 30K but I managed to just sneak in under 3 hours.”

Just “touring” the course puts Corrine currently in third place among the 30 km classical skiers. She’s ahead of a bunch of SCUM including her younger husband.

Dr. Don skis virtual 30 km Sonot and makes discovery

Don Pendergrast and Cam Leonard classical skied the 30 km virtual Denali State Bank Sonot Kkaazoot yesterday in a time of 3:21:23.

Don writes: “Temperatures were 26-28 degrees, the tracks had just been set (Yippie), but the light snow made them slow.  Wax was Start Tar 5 and worked well.

We kept up a steady pace throughout the course, but a careful examination of the pace data revealed something that I’d expected for some time; the data support that I ski faster down hill than I do up hill.  I wonder if others have noticed this phenomenon?  I believe further studies with more participants are needed to verify this observation.”

Congratulation, Don and Cam! I think Don has come up with a suitable topic for his second Ph.D. dissertation. Get to work on it.

Bad Bob & Sharon skate virtual 30 km Sonot Kkaazoot

On Sunday, Bad Bob and Sharon Baker skate skied their virtual 30 km Denali State Bank Sonot Kkaazoot. Sharon finished in 2:11:48 and Bad Bob’s time was 2:21:43.

Bad Bob writes: “Sunday was a beautiful day to ski at Birch Hill.  Sharon and I skated our way around the 30 kilometer course under blue skies and 15 to 20 degree temps.  Most of the trail system was fairly freshly set with wonderful corduroy and smooth tracks!

Unfortunately, both Sharon and I have not skated a whole lot, and before we even climbed out of the BLACK HOLE, our legs were screaming, NO!!!  It was at about this point in our virtual 30, that Sharon began to pull away…nothing physically I could do about it, but just keep skiing and hoping for a bodily comeback, which never happened.

FINAL RESULTS for us were….Sharon 2:11:48, and for BAD BOB  2:21:43.  I measured 28.97 km for a distance, but hey, that’s what the course is, so no need to ski any farther, besides, I was not sure I could…very humbling.  Can’t wait for the 50K!”

Laura & Sven Grage ski 30 km Sonot Kkaazoot together

Laura and Sven Grage took advantage of the afternoon warmth and the encouragement of Coach Turman to skate ski around the 30 km Virtual Denali State Bank Sonot Kkaazoot in a sizzling 2:05.

Laura writes: “We skied the 30 km course this afternoon in the last of the sunshine. The course was in great shape. We stuck together and finished in 2:05. We ran into coach Turman midway through the course and of course she picked up on our labored but steady pace and took to cheering us on; thank you coach for the positive energy! Thank you to all the groomers and volunteers at NSCF who make everything awesome, no matter what! We don’t carry a phone usually, so didn’t catch an “on-course” photo, but given how fun all the pictures are, here’s one from our spring break trip in the White Mountains.”

Thanks for the report and great photo. Given that this year’s event is virtual, it is really nice to be able to see the smiling faces of fellow Sonot Kkaazoot skiers who we won’t see at this year’s event.

Max Kaufman skis virtual 30 km Sonot on Sunday

Max Kaufman sked his classical virtual 30 km Denali State Bank Sonot Kkaazoot on Sunday in a time of 1:49:12. Like most skiers to date, he reports that his actual course distance was a little shy of 30 km.

Max writes:

“Golden sunlight filtering through the trees,  with birch shadows across the trail. I finished the course at sunset with the red chalet ablaze.  The snow out White Bear is still cold and fine.  This is the first imaginary race I’ve done where the groomers start ripping out the tracks while you’re still on the final kilometer.  All in good fun:  nice job groomers!”

Granger skates virtual 30 km Sonot Kkaazoot

Donovan Granger became the first skier to skate the virtual 30 km Denali State Bank Sonot Kkaazoot today in 2 hours and 30 minutes.

Donovan writes:

“It was another beautiful day in paradise, and a stellar day for a Tour deBirch under the post equinox mid day sun! Finished the 30 k course and the tracking device indicated I was a little shy of the mark,so I did another stadium lap with a sidewinder groomer ramp addition. Big fun under the Equinox sun!”

Donovan was an overachiever on his virtual 30 km Sonot so I’m expecting a virtual 50 km report from him later. All skiers are reporting the 30 km course to be somewhat short.

Congratulations, right now Donovan is the fastest virtual 30 km Sonot Kkaazoot skier by over 10 minutes.

Joanna Fox skis virtual 30 km Sonot

Joanna Fox had a long “to do” list before a week long regional swim meet trip with her son to Phoenix during the traditional Sonot week. Thus, she told the remedial SCUM that she wouldn’t be doing the virtual Sonot Kkaazoot. However, when this weekend turned out to be lovely weather, it didn’t take much arm twisting to get her to leisurely ski with the SCUM mom on Saturday and then pace the SCUM on Sunday.

Joanna’s official 30 km classical virtual Denali State Bank Sonot Kkaazoot time was 3:11.

She wrote:

“Today I actually PR’d on a total of 8 sections of the route, including Outhouse, which I’m finding hard to believe given I stopped twice, including one long stop to take off my mittens and move my handwarmers to the thumbs. I did stay in the tracks on the downhills (which often I don’t), so that must have helped. I was also feeling really good during that section. I also got a PR yesterday on the North Forty A-Climb, which I think is the last one coming out of the Blacks.”

Here is the documentation for Joanna’s virtual 30 km classical ski installment from Saturday:

 And from Sunday:

Congratulations, Joanna. You were definitely faster on Sunday when you weren’t trying to keep me company.
