Mead observes wildlife during virtual 10 km Sonot

Mossy Mead writes “NSCF LOL Monday Night Group member, Mossy Mead, kick and glided around the 10 K Denali State Bank Sonot Kkaazoot course this Sunday morning 3/28/21. Time: 2:03 – a possible qualifier for the red lantern award. Fresh fox tracks were followed around most of the White Bear part of the course. Near Beacon cutoff the fox left signs that it had made a dive for a fresh vole snack.

I declined the suggestion and stuck with the raisins-walnuts-chocolate chips I had in my pack. This ski is dedicated to Barb Powell who died this Equinox of cancer. She was the best buddy for hiking and skiing outings.”

Dr. Simon skates virtual 30 km

Dr. Mark Simon took a break from his duties at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital (thanks for all your work during the COVID-19 pandemic) to skate ski the 30 km virtual Denali State Bank Sonot Kkaazoot today in  2:43:24.

Mark writes: “Beautiful morning…..into afternoon.  Such a treat to see so many Fairbanksans out on Sonot Sunday…. Thanks for a Great event and a Great day!  Mark Ross and Bob Baker hawking posters the perfect post race ambiance.”

Pat Lovely skis 10 & 30 km virtual courses

Pat Lovely skate skied the virtual 10 and 30 km Denali State Bank Sonot Kkaazoot courses in times of 37:07 and 2:01:52, respectively.

Pat writes: “The ski last Sunday (March 21) was sunny and uneventful a beautiful afternoon and lots of people out.”

For the 30 km ski, he writes: “The Tuesday ski I started late afternoon and I had a few missed trails and wrong turns. I went the wrong way on Black Baron and had to ski back up which added some extra and then when I finished I realized I had missed Medivac and Rollercoaster so I had to go back and pick those trails up and add 3 min 23 secs to my 30 km time for 2:01:52.”

Congratulations, Pat. Even with your wrong turns and extra kilometers skied, your 30 km time is currently the second fastest recorded.

Hannon skis virtual 30 km after three tries

Robert Hannon, a local journalist and radio broadcaster, is somewhat geographically challenged so it took 3 tries to finish the 30 km virtual Denali State Bank Sonot Kkaazoot in 3:21. In between the start of his virtual 30 km and his finish, he probably skied another 30 km. His virtual 30 km Sonot Kkaazoot was done on his classical skin skis.

Robert explains in his Sunday email: “Here is the hopefully last leg. Just over ten minutes, plus the 1:10 from yesterday and the 2:01 from last week make it something like 3:21 for 30 K.”

On Saturday at 12:14 p.m., Robert wrote: “Well, the attached image tells the tale. My watch paused seven minutes in. But you can see the start time and end. My route was as we discussed: the blacks, blue, relay and all the warm up.”

On Saturday at 2:05 p.m., he wrote: “Yikes. Spaced out the South Tower RC Bypass, but I did do all of the Warm-up. Oh well. If I make it tomorrow.”

On Sunday, March 21, Robert skied the 20 km Sonot Kkaazoot loop with the SCUM, and wrote: “My watch is wacky. My time was 2:01:07”

Congratulations, Robert! Your persistence paid off and you’ve finished the 10 and 30 km classical Sonot Kkaazoot courses.

Norma classic skis 10 km Sonot

As part of her ski-swim double workout on Saturday, Norma Haubenstock classical skied the 10 km virtual Denali State Bank Sonot Kkaazoot in 56:52.

Norma writes: “I finally did my 10 k. I was classic skiing and got started late. I was pressed for time so I could make it to swimming.  I was 10 minutes late.”

We’re glad that Norma prioritized skiing over swimming.

Norma also wrote: “I might try a little skating tomorrow but might find some flatter trails. Not sure. I also want to take advantage of the beautifully groomed trails at birch hill. They are perfect.”

Dianna & Lauren ski leisurely 10 km Sonot

Dianna Leinberger and Lauren Attanas skied the 10 km virtual Denali State Bank Sonot Kkaazoot yesterday in 1:27. (corrected time on 3/28/21 to agree with time submitted by Lauren)

Dianna writes: “My friend and I skied the Sonot Saturday, March 27.  We skied a leisurely 10k.  While I have skied the Sonot before (a long time ago) she had never done it.  She did it this year because there was a 10k option.  Maybe consider keeping the 10k option.

It was a lovely day with light snow.  The trails were groomed to perfection!”

Cathy Donaldson skates virtual 30 km Sonot

Cathy Donaldson skate skied her virtual Denali State Bank Sonot Kkaazoot yesterday in 2:49:25.

Cathy writes: “It was nice and warm but the snow was suction-y and almost caused me to face plant once or twice in the blacks. Glad I have a little bit of structure in my skis or it would have been a bit worse! Didn’t have the full details of the course in my memory before leaving, so I ended up skiing a little extra. Coming out of Relay, I didn’t know whether to go down the ramp and up east ramp to the Tower. I did it just in case:) So my distance is a little closer to an actual 30 km.”

Cathy was an overachiever because she definitely didn’t want to shortcut the course. Actually, Cathy’s longterm memory was spot on because the last time we skied the regular Sonot Kkaazoot course we did the ramp and East Ramp before doing the Tower Loop.
